UHFMagazine - 2008-01 - January 2008: Hamster digital scroll

As readers know, once in a while I add some piece of hamster technology- nothing existing, but that is feasible, within the reach of our technology.

As a kid, once in a while I created something- and I studied as many technologies as I could.

Once in while, I passed over this information that became something real.

My purpose is always creating something that is simple to use.

Despite my sometimes complex writings.

This month, the hamster digital scroll.

What is

I am a confessed, unreformed book-worm. Therefore, the scroll is the origin.

One of my first acts of independence as a kid was to buy my own books and set up my own library- complementary, and sometimes overlapped, to my family&squot; library.

And I remember reading about the Library of Alexandria... :-)

So, when I started using the Gutenberg Archive to feed first my Toshiba Libretto, then the PocketPC, I was looking closer to a scroll.

Over the last few years, some technologies have been announced, like the rollable LCD, ultra mobile PCs with solid state disks, and so on.

The hamster digital scroll is quite simple:
  • the handle bar contains the logic and the rollable LCD screen
  • as it is designed for hamsters, it has few, cluncky buttons that simply do
    • move to the front cover
    • move to the back cover
    • move back one page
    • move ahead one page
    • move to the table of contents
    • move to the index
    • open randomly one page
  • the solid-state hard-disk is contained in the handle-bar
  • the processor and memory are, obviously, hamster technology
  • the scrollable LCD is 5, 7, or 10 inches
  • the back of the screen and the handle bar contain plastic rollable solar cells
  • the unit is delivered also with a USB port, so that it can be used a an hard-disk, while some
  • wireless induction power supply as an emergency power supply
The point is simple: no moving parts, each component can be replaced by the user by using standard components.
